Review: "The Dead Beat"

reading, creative
I've got a small stack of books on my dresser that I read over the past several months. Over the next few weeks, I'm going to review them on GoodReads.com. Here's the first one:

"The Dead Beat: Lost Souls, Lucky Stiffs and the Perverse Pleasures of Obituaries" by Marilyn Johnson

Thanks, Alyce. Having done genealogy research and supporting the DAR library volunteering online to index the names in obituary collections, I do read a lot more of them than I think the average person would.

As you'll see from my review, it's a book that almost has too much information in it. Yet, if you've ever wondered what went behind the decisions made by obituary writers (primarily in major newspapers, where they get more leeway), you will find it interesting.

Actually, I was going to donate this book, so if you'd like to read it, I can either mail it to you or we can get together (with KFP) and have lunch and I'll give it to you.

I would like to read it if you don't mind. I can re-imburse you for postage or we can get together - whichever is easiest for you, really.

I am actually indexing a collection of obituaries from North Carolina now and a lot of them list the pallbearers (and honorary pallbearers), which is something I don't recall seeing in PA. And some of the ones from WWI are phrased pretty well, you can just tell they are old. But I digress.

Thanks for the offer, so just let me know what's easiest for you. Hope all else is well!
