Second Chance Idol, Week 2: Reverberation

This is my entry for Week 2 of Second Chance Idol, where the topic is "Echo Chamber."

Reverberation

Cup telephones, wire-hanger gongs
Styrofoam amplifiers. I wonder
how many moments will stick.
Will a word like
echolocation
conjure a handkerchiefed "bat"
spinning as human
"objects" clap and
"moths" click plastic spoons?

Will they recall
cardboard tubes pointed towards
sideways roasting pans, so a
whisper bounces from one tube
to the other?

Or that time we tried to hear
the room's ambient sound -- air
hum, traffic rumble, clock pop,
metallic kicks -- submerged
in hissed responses to one boy's
gasped laugh?

Like me, learning about China
by sticking rice with chopsticks.
Tapping poetry rhythms on my desk.
Sliding paper around a watercolor
to snap stop-motion film frames.

So many loves start
with such a seed.

It just so happens that the science of noise is the current topic at the after-school science club I teach at my son's school.
