NaPoWriMo 10: Hidden in Plain Sight

My National Poetry Writing Month poem today was inspired by a quote, as suggested by the poetry prompt I posted at Wild Violet: NAPOWRIMO 2020 - Prompt 10.

chalk-house

A house drawn by a child in chalk

Hidden in Plain Sight

It had been boarded up for more than
20 years.
The dust, the arcane
smells, dry wood and amber.
Cobweb-clouded
hidden perils. Cool
even in summer heat.
Rustles. Sunken corners.

Lately, I've been renovating
my dream landscapes. Fresh
plaster, uncracked paint.
Stairs secured. Bright.
I supposed it means
progress. Coping
with loss. But the house
is long gone
when I wake.

The quote I used to inspire this poem came from the following article: In Bella Vista, a Beaux Arts Gem Hides in Plain Sight.
