Plastic Swank

Saturday was the second day of Com Con, the annual Otakon staff retreat, the day of the big business meeting as well as small group meetings and socializing.

One of the biggest Otakon meetings of the year

Despite staying up late the night before, I woke up early enough to get in a morning swim before breakfast. I would have preferred if the water had been a little warmer, but once I got moving it was fine.

We had breakfast at the hotel's buffet, which was included in the price of our rooms. Then, while my husband, The Gryphon, attended the Otakon board meeting, I tried to get a little more shuteye and got my shower.

The main meeting kicked off at noon, and as the pictures show, it was a huge affair. For me, there were several highlights. The first and most personally interesting, was feeling my baby move for the first time! Every time the room got loud with laughter and boisterousness, he would move. He also moved in reaction to happy baby sounds from The Doctor's one-year-old girl, who was sitting two rows behind this. Later, when I told her husband about it, he said, "She's not allowed to talk to boys."

Another highlight was the fact that the president, Vyxle, allowed me to make an announcement about the fact that I was recording video for The Bodyguard, who's stationed in Iraq. And everyone cooperated with me as I stood at the front of the room and shot them all giving him a greeting.

From an Otakon business standpoint, the highlights were getting approval for the new Press policy from our legal consultant, and getting leads on two possible new Press Relations staffers.

Even though it was a business meeting, though, it was Otakon, so there was fun to be had.

Following the meeting, there was a somewhat brief break, just long enough for me to get changed into a dressier outfit. I actually had found something in my closet from before I got pregnant: a cotton-blend dress with blue and brown swirling patterns and an empire waist. Surprisingly, it still works. Unfortunately, I forgot to have someone photograph me, so until one of my friends posts a pic of me on Facebook, I won't have one to share here.

The next scheduled activities were a cocktail hour and then dinner. This year there were few speeches (yay!), and the buffet had a great selection of options.

After dinner, one of the Guest Relations staffers made a general announcement that anyone who was dressed up and wanted to get in a group picture should come into the hallway. This has been a tradition for about four years or so, where the people who "get swanky" get photograph evidence. This is primarily because we mostly see each other in black staff T-shirts the rest of the year!

I got in the group shot and then took some of my own while he was taking one of the board of directors.

For the rest of the evening, it was open time for small group meetings and fun. I spoke further to my two potential Press Relations staffers and confirmed that they would both be good choices and are interested in helping me out.

I spent the rest of the evening drifting from room to room, socializing with people, shooting video, and taking photos.

Plastic toys were used as centerpieces at the dinner
and were played with by many the rest of the night.

The Gryphon and I didn't stay up nearly as late on Saturday night as we had the night before, but we were still yawning the next morning after a reasonable amount of sleep. After the breakfast buffet, I went to The Scrapbooker's room for a Mary Kay consultation, since she's begun selling it. The products were tempting, and I wish I could have bought more, but I just ordered one item that I really liked.

The rest of the morning, people were just packing up and saying their good-byes. Since the meeting rooms were still open, we hung around talking to folks until the afternoon, when a group of us drove to a nearby Chinese buffet for a late lunch/early dinner, including The Godfather and many other Guest Relations staffers. It was an appropriate end to a weekend discussing our nonprofit, educational organization promoting Asian culture.
