Guest Post: Older Mom

I've written a guest post for theafaye about being an older mom. It's taken me a while to do it, in part because of all the Yahoo! News stories I've been writing. I only get some much productive time in the day, because of my Kung Fu Panda! Ironic, isn't it, that my post on parenting was delayed due to parenting?

And now, I must go. KFP wants me to read him his Elmo library book again!

It's f-locked right now. Would you like me to make it public?

One of the funny things about your post is that I don't think of you as being all that much older than me, but I think of myself as a "young" mom. Most of the friends I have that are my age don't have children yet or they're just having their first baby around now, whereas I already have a five year old and two more! Most of the other parents at Pre-K seem older than me (part of that being that they may have older children whereas Olivia is my first baby).

I also have a lot of friends my sister's age, about 7 years younger than me, and they're just now starting to have babies. Most of my college friends waited until their 30s, too. So maybe there won't be as much of a drastic difference for me as there was for earlier generations. I know that when my mom had my sister at 35, she had rude people asking her if she was too old to start again with a baby!

Yes, people think my mom is absolutely batty. When she had me she was only 19, and she had my youngest sibling when she was 44!

My grandmother also a large gap. She had both of her sons by the time she turned 21, but her third baby (my mom) when she was 35. Mom wasn't a planned baby, and my grandparents were rather shocked (but pleased in the end).

That is a huge gap! How did you get along with your younger siblings? Were you still close?

We are very close, though I'm more like a third parent to the younger three (especially the two youngest who are still in elementary school).

I'd imagine. Must be nice for them! Even at just 7 years older, my sister regards me as something of a second mother.
