It's his own weight. I've told him muscle weighs more than fat, but it doesn't change anything.

OMG yes! We have a male friend who's the same way. Please tell him to read my article and to click on the first article I mentioned. There are great photos there, showing how body composition can change even when weight doesn't (or goes up).
