Taking a hike through family history is such an awesome way to use this prompt.

Thanks! I've done a lot of hiking and camping, but no stories came to mind. So when my son started writing about his own one-foot hike, it made me think of my mom cataloguing plants in a one-foot space for a research project in grad school. That's what led to the poem.

I loved the way the one foot hike inspiriation became the framework here in the lines "examine the square before you" and "imagine yourself as your mother"
great use of the topic by unraveling the branches of the "family tree"

well done and beautifully written!

Thank you! The response to my poetry this season makes me want to get back in the habit of writing poems regularly.

oh i adored this! and i find tracing ancestors fascinating too. i know quite a lot about mine on my maternal side because my aunt's managed to trace the family tree back quite a long way, but there's still a lot more to find. on my father's side too we have a lot of info but there's always more waiting to be uncovered!

So fascinating. You are lucky your aunt has been doing that work. My paternal grandmother did quite a bit of work, and I've been on Ancestry.com for the past eight months of so, filling in some of the lines where she hit dead ends. It's wonderful to get inside her head a bit. She was a librarian, always clipping articles she thought I'd be interested in, and I loved her dearly. I love finding a notation from her with a question mark, because that's my clue from her that I need to start tracking down that answer!

Make sure your aunt puts down what she can in a comprehensible way so that it's clear to everyone in the family.
