NaPoWriMo 7: Purple

Today's National Poetry Writing Month poem is about a color, which was my prompt for today at Wild Violet: NAPOWRIMO 2020 - Prompt 7.

Close-up of a burning purple candle

Bayberry candle -- like rich berry fused with pine --
deep plum-colored wax. Etched
extravagantly, its bumpy outside slippery
to the touch. Only brought out
at Christmas, the smell suffusing the season's
heady hopes. How often can I say
exactly when I started to love
anything? But I know my romance
with nature's rarest color began
not with pansies
or violets
but from inhaling
that candle's sweet woody scent.
